چکیده

This study is written in a way to stress the importance of introducing the active force generated by the myocardium in the formalism describing the pressure-volume relation (PVR) in the left ventricle. Various clinical applications of the end-systolic pressure-volume relation (ESPVR) are also discussed. Attention is given to the calculation of the ejection fraction (EF) and the myocardial longitudinal axis shortening, a subject that is gaining importance in the study of heart disease and heart failure. Key-Words: Pressure-volume relation in the left ventricle, end-systolic pressure-volume relation, active force of the myocardium, isovolumic pressure, ejection fraction, myocardial longitudinal axis shortening, cardiac mechanics.

Ventriculo-arterial coupling and the areas under the end-systolic pressure-volume relation.

Ventriculo-arterial coupling is expressed as the ratio Emax/eam (maximum ventricular elastance/arterial elastance). Different areas under the end-systolic pressure-volume relation (ESPVR) are expressed in terms of Emax/eam. The explicit inclusion of the active force of the myocardium in the mathematical formalism describing the pressure-volume relation (PVR) leads to new insight into the mechan...

The use of left ventricular end-ejection pressure and peak pressure in the estimation of the end-systolic pressure-volume relationship.

The end-systolic pressure-volume relationship (ESPVR) as derived from left ventricular pressure-volume loops has gained increasing acceptance as an index of ventricular contractile function. In animal experiments the ESPVR has been defined as a line connecting the upper left corners of several differently loaded pressure-volume (P-V) loops with a slope parameter Ees and a volume axis intercept ...

Measurement of end-systolic pressure-volume relations by intra-aortic balloon occlusion.

A new situ technique has been developed for measuring peak end-systolic elastance, Emax, that does not alter intrinsic or reflex-stimulated cardiac contractility. Afterload is varied by the inflation of an intra-aortic balloon catheter positioned in the ascending aorta. Balloon inflation is timed to interrupt ventricular ejection transiently at different times during the ejection phase, therefo...

LABORATORY INVESTIGATION VENTRICULAR PERFORMANCE Elfect of heart rate on the canine end-systolic pressure-volume relationship

Although the rate dependence of isolated muscle contractility is well known, the ventricular end-systolic pressure-volume relationship (ESPVR) has been reported to be insensitive to heart rate. To resolve this contradiction, we used an isolated, ejecting canine heart preparation perfused at a constant coronary arterial pressure. Heart rate was changed from 60 to 200 beats/min in steps of 20 bea...

Disparity between ejection and end-systolic indexes of left ventricular contractility in mitral regurgitation.

To examine left ventricular function in mitral regurgitation (MR), we compared the ejection phase indexes of left ventricular contractility with maximal systolic elastance (Emax) in an experimental preparation of MR. In eight anesthetized open-chest dogs, pressure-volume loops were derived during afterload manipulation with methoxamine and nitroprusside from simultaneous left ventricular pressu...
